Showing signs of recovery, the Indian economy grew by 6.1 per cent in the June quarter up from 5.8 per cent in the previous quarter. In contrast, the economic expansion was much higher at 7.8 per cent in the first quarter of last fiscal.

The GDP growth recorded in the first quarter of the financial year is the fastest since the beginning of the global financial crisis. The accelerated growth could be attributed to government’s increased spending and lower interest rates, even though it comes at the expense of a sharply wider deficit.

“I think the worst is over and we should have more recovery in the days ahead,” said Montek Singh Ahluwalia, Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission.

However, economists do not share the government’s optimism because the real impact of the drought on its growth forecast hasn’t been assessed till now.

Experts are concerned that a hit to consumer sentiment could slow the recovery and even prevent consumers from spending too much.

The data released on Monday showed the mining and electricity in industrial sector posted higher growth in the first quarter of this fiscal. However, agriculture and manufacturing industry grew at a slower pace from the year-earlier period. The services sector also recorded a weak growth of 7.8 per cent versus as against 10.2 per cent recorded a year-earlier.

So, just like the global recession, the worst for India may be over, but what will be closely watched ahead is the impact of the drought. And if draught plays into inflation and high interest rates, then it can hinder recovery.

By Garima Verma

Football does that you. You chew your nails, you skip a beat and you play havoc with your blood pressure. More so, when the Indian team takes to the ground for an encounter like Nehru Cup final.

It wasn’t any different this Monday as well. Emotions were at their wildest best as Syria’s Hamzeh Alattouni missed the penalty and India defended their Nehru Cup title in style.

As India triumphed 6-5 over the last edition’s runners-up Syria, fans jumped the barriers and ran onto the field to congratulate their heroes of the day. And, at that moment even the police personnel were rendered helpless.

Match action in pics

After both the teams failed to reach a conclusion in the allotted 90 minutes, Rennedy Singh put India ahead in the 114th minute.

The crowd had just started the celebrations, when Syria’s Ali Dyab proved them to be premature. He led his side back into the contention in the very last minute of the extra time.

With the crowd shocked and the stadium going pin-drop silent, India coach Bob Houghton and his Syrian counterpart Fajer Ebrahim prepared their sides for the penalty shoot-out.

Both the sides made sure that the match, which had started on a high note, ended the same way. Egged on by the crowd, Houghton’s wards had started raiding the rival area right from the first minute.

As India skipper Bhaichung Bhutia and his younger partner Sunil Chettri led a slew of attacks into the Syrian half, they, however, just could not breach the physically-superior rival defence.

Bhutia was cautioned by the referee for going down in the 28th minute after a rumble in the Syrian area.

The visitors, who had a comparatively quieter outing in the first half, came out all firing in the second part of the match. But the Indian custodian Subrata Pal was at his best as usual and warded off the danger every time the Indian defence went into a momentary lapse.

India almost put a lid on the encounter in the 80th minute. Steven Dias played an accurate volley to Chettri in the 18-yard box. But the striker’s header just went off the mark by a whisker.

With both the sides exchanging shots at each other’s post regularly, the tie advanced into the extra time. Houghton threw in Rennedy into the battleground in the 100th minute.

The senior midfielder proved his coach right when in the 114th minute he landed his free-kick into the Syria net, leaving custodian Mosab Balhous stunned and stands going wild.

The winning feeling was yet to sink in when Syria reminded all that it was not yet over. Dyab’s sharp header went zooming past the Indian custodian, Pal, and referee blew the whistle for the end of the extra time. Thrillers don’t get better than this. It was time for the nervous moments of the penalty shootout.

Climax Lawrence easily slotted the first ball home. Syria’s Raja Rafe followed suite. The twist of fate then made its presence felt when India’s goal hero Rennedy missed the following spot-kick. Pal made amends for that as he got his hand to Wael Ayan’s shot and the ball went out after hitting the post.

Chettri took the lead for India as the Delhi boy calmly lodged the sphere into the net. Then it was time for another master display from Pal. This time Ahmad Haj Muhmad’s shot met with Pal’s left hand and it kissed the crossbar before flying out. Steven Dias had no difficulty in converting the next one.

Now, with Syria in a position to lose in case of missing their fourth strike, skipper Balhous took the mantle upon himself. He didn’t break his side’s hopes.

India’s Mehrajuddin Wadoo, however, failed to convert which could have been the winning stroke. Abdul Fatah Alaga made no mistake with the fifth one to keep his side in the contention.

With the match delicately balanced, Anwar walked towards the goal area to take the first shot in the sudden death. Fans heaved a sigh of relief as the sturdy defender sent Balhous the wrong way and scored.

Alattouni’s shot then flew above the woodwork and Houghton’s boys got their third international title in three years. And, this time it wasn’t the customary. “We are the champions” but our very own “Chak De India” to cap a memorable evening.

With 100 deaths in 3,987 laboratory confirmed positive H1N1 cases, India has registered a mortality rate of 2.3 per cent — much above the 0.9 per cent mortality rate for the rest of the world.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), as on August 21, there have been 1,799 deaths in total 182,000 laboratory confirmed cases across the world, which makes 0.9 per cent the mortality rate across the world.

“The 2.3 per cent mortality rate is higher compared to the rest of the world, but we are the only country which is looking at laboratory confirmed cases as positive. Other countries are not testing and have included people with flu-like symptoms as positive,” said Dr S K Srivastava, Director General of Health Services.

With 584 deaths, Brazil tops the list of countries reporting fatalities due to the H1N1 virus. The mortality rate in Brazil is 0.29 per cent. However, if one takes into consideration the 5,206 laboratory confirmed cases, the mortality rate is 10 per cent — much higher than India’s. Brazil is followed by the US with 525 deaths, Argentina with 439 and Mexico with 179 deaths, according to the WHO. India is at the eighth position as far as the number of swine flu deaths is concerned.

Argentina has a mortality rate of 1.08 per cent. However, if one takes into account the 7,173 laboratory confirmed cases, the mortality rate from 439 deaths is 6.1 per cent.

The US has stopped posting figures pertaining to positive cases on its official website and has the figures for hospitalisation, instead. As of August 21, 7,983 hospitalisations were reported in the US. “If we take hospitalisation as the denominator, the death percentage is much higher,” said Srivastava. “Look at our population and the number of confirmed cases we have. There are lakhs of cases in Argentina and they take the percentage from these figures and not necessarily from the laboratory confirmed cases,” he added.

The WHO has estimated that more than two billion people will be affected by the virus within two years. Earlier this week, a White House panel said 90,000 deaths are likely due to H1N1 virus in the US.

The Health Ministry is trying to generate its own data to help the government estimate the fund required to control the disease in the country.

“We don’t want to go by the disease models that other people in the world are following. Instead, we want to arrive at our independent estimates. But it will take time,” said Srivastava.

The ministry has held informal meetings with several public health experts and the Public Health Foundation of India.

“Next week we will be able to finalise a group of experts for this purpose,” said Dr V M Katoch, DG of ICMR, and Secretary, Health Research, Ministry of Health.

Those experts who are asserting that the concept that the swine influenza is less dangerous than the ordinary influenza viruses is misleading.

Many have looked at the number of deaths from swine flu compared to the approximately 36,000 US people that die of the normal influenza every year and decide the swine influenza isn’t so bad. The swine influenza appeared at the end of the influenza season. Also it was toward the end of the college year, so many youngsters are now out of school.

Scientists are anxious that when we approach the standard influenza season the swine influenza will be a major threat.

Dr William Shaffner of Vanderbilt College stated in a chat with ABC News “All that early discussion about mildness should be modified as the information has evolved. It’s not a harmless infection. We anticipate that whatever it does this summer, it’s likely to be a major player in the fall, and when something this new and unpredictable shows up, we are well-advised to do our best to prepare for it.”

The World Health Organization is about to move ahead with the development of the swine influenza vaccine but will establish at a later date whether to distribute it. The Southern Hemisphere is entering into it’s yearly influenza season now as they approach winter. Professionals will be monitoring the situation really closely in those areas to better judge what is probably going to occur as the Northern Hemisphere enters into the influenza season this autumn.

Two very shocking bits of news about the H1N1 flu virus have emerged recently. The first is that research and analysis is proving that the ever-present swine flu virus may be a lot more dangerous than people have so far been told: It appears to resemble the 1918 pandemic virus in the fact that it is capable of embedding itself deep in lung tissue and causing deadly infections. This is very different from the more common “seasonal flu” which does not replicate in the lungs.

Explaining this concept, lead researcher Yoshihiro Kawaoka of the University of Wisconsin wrote in the journal Nature: “When we conducted the experiments in ferrets and monkeys, the seasonal virus did not replicate in the lungs… The H1N1 virus replicates significantly better in the lungs.”

As Reuters reports, Kawaoka also added, “There is a misunderstanding about this virus… There is clear evidence the virus is different than seasonal influenza.”

History tells us that the 1918 influenza pandemic killed at least 40 million people globally (and probably many more). Also remember a very salient fact: That was a time when obesity was extremely rare. Today, obesity is alarmingly common among first-world nations, and obesity is now suspected of making a person highly susceptible to swine flu fatalities.

In this context, the World Health Organization has announced that swine flu is “unstoppable” and is now directing all the nations of the world to vaccinate their citizens against the H1N1 influenza strain. This is essentially an order for global mandatory vaccinations.

At the same time the WHO is recommending mass global vaccinations against the swine flu, it also states on its own website that such vaccines have never been proven safe! To quote from its website” Since new technologies are involved in the production of some pandemic vaccines, which have not yet been extensively evaluated for their safety in certain population groups, it is very important to implement post-marketing surveillance of the highest possible quality. In addition, rapid sharing of the results of immunogenicity and post-marketing safety and effectiveness studies among the international community will be essential for allowing countries to make necessary adjustments to their vaccination policies.”

This is very disturbing as the WHO does not endorse the vaccine, but in the same light wants us all to get vaccinated and see what happens!

1. Don’t leave home if you’ve got flu-like symptoms.

If you have a fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills, and fatigue; In many cases diarrhea and vomiting may also be symptoms of swine flu.

Unless you are going to get medical therapy, stay at home to prevent infecting others. That implies not going to work or faculty, not running your ordinary errands, and not traveling. By staying home, you will help stop other folks from growing sick.

2. Don’t expect a face mask to give you adequate protection.

According to the CDC, it isn’t clear how effective face masks are at stopping the transmission of the H1N1 or seasonal influenza viruses. The same is true for respirators worn snugly over the face as filters. The CDC does not endorse face masks or respirators in most settings, except if you are at high chance of dreadful illness from influenza and are caring for somebody who has a flu-like sickness, or for high-risk people who can’t prevent from being in an overcrowded setting where the swine flu virus is present.

3. Don’t expect your flu jab to give you the protection

Scientists are working on a swine influenza vaccine, but that may be a fresh vaccination. Do get immunized against seasonal influenza, when that vaccine becomes available.

Seasonal influenza can be significant, particularly for children, elders, and folk with puny immunological systems. The CDC points out that seasonal influenza or its complications kill a median of 36,000 folk each year in America and hospitalize more than two hundred thousand folk. Getting immunized yearly against seasonal influenza is the single easiest way to defend against seasonal influenza, according to the CDC.

Ever since the out break of swine flu people have started looking for all types of remedies to prevent this dreaded disease. Naturally people have also looked up to ayurveda the oldest system of medicine to prevent this disease. Although there is no mention of swine flu in ayurvedic texts but signs similar to swine flu have been laid out in it. Let us find out exactly how ayurveda can help keep this flu at bay.

In ayurveda flu symptoms include fever, body ache, soreness in the throat, feeling cold, debility which are similar to H1NI virus symptoms. It is believed that flu is a result of decreased immunity levels which weakens body’s mechanism to fight against foreign attacks. So to treat swine flu ayurveda mentions some herbs which can help body boost its immune system and help fight any foreign micro organisms.

Herbs That Can Help Prevent Swine Flu

There are certain time tested herbs in ayurveda which can be effective in preventing flu they include neem, ginger, pepper and elderberry extract. Once the body becomes strong internally after the intake of these herbs then herbs like Echinacea and triphala are given to completely remove any symptoms one might have of flu.

Importance of Echinacea

Echinacea is a very important herb in ayurveda to treat any type of flu. It is used as a natural antibiotic, treats infections, increases body’s resistance against diseases and helps in purification of blood. Other things like vitamin c and zinc oxide are also helpful in fighting against flu symptoms.

Overall Analysis

Looking at the above list of herbs it is clearly indicated that if you have any flu symptoms you should act as soon as possible, there is no need to panic as flu is completely curable but prevention is better than cure so if you have a weak digestive system try to strengthen it by adding spices like turmeric and coriander in your food and avoid junk and canned foods. Taking appropriate rest will also help.

According to Kathleen Sebelius, Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, your kids should be the first targets for mass swine influenza shots when faculty starts this autumn. This is a silly presumption for lots of reasons, not to mention unusually high risk.

In Australia, where the winter season is underway, Federal Health Minister Nicola Roxon is reassuring parents the swine influenza is no more perilous than regular seasonal influenza.

“Most people, including youngsters, will experience extraordinarily mild symptoms and recover without any medical intervention,” she announced. Sydney-based immunization expert Robert Booy foretells swine influenza could be lethal to about twice as many kids in the year to come as regular influenza. Booy predicts 10-12 kids could die of the H1N1 pathogen, compared to the 5 or 6 regular influenza deaths seen among youngsters in a median year in Australia.

Less than one hundred kids in America die each year from seasonal influenza viruses. If we use Australia’s mathematics, a particularly broad estimate would be another one hundred youngsters could possibly die from swine influenza in the US in the year to come. If youngsters are the first target group in the US as per Sebelius, that implies we are about to inject around 75 million youngsters with a fast tracked vaccine containing novel adjuvants, including dangerous squalene, to stop perhaps one hundred deaths.

I am not overlooking the crisis of the loss of even one kid to an illness like the H1N1 influenza virus. But there may be no debate that needless mass injection of millions of youngsters with a vaccine containing an adjuvant known for causing a number of devitalizing autoimmune sicknesses is a reckless, deadly plan.

The presumed intent of a vaccination is to help enhance immunity to most likely damaging organisms that cause sickness and illness. However, your body’s immunological response is designed to do that replying to organisms, which attack your body naturally.

It’s a different system from the one turned on when a vaccine is injected into your body. Your IgA immune response is your body’s first line of defense. Its job is to defeat invading organisms at their entry points, reducing or maybe damaging the requirement for activation of your body’s immune reaction. When a pathogen is injected into your body in a vaccine, and particularly when mixed with an immune adjuvant like squalene, your IgA immunological reaction is bypassed and your body’s immunity mechanism kicks into top gear responding to the vaccination.

Injecting organisms into your body to incite protection is in contrast to nature, and vaccination carries enormous potential to do significant damage to your well-being. The most important ingredient in a vaccine is either killed viruses or live ones that have been weakened. As well as the viruses and other additions, many vaccines also contain immune adjuvants like aluminum and squalene.

The point of an immune adjuvant added to a vaccine is to improve (turbo charge) your immune reply to the vaccination. Adjuvants cause your immunity mechanism to overreact to the advent of the organism you are being immunized against. Adjuvants should get the job finished quicker ( but actually not more safely ), which decreases the quantity of vaccine needed per dose, and the number of doses given per individual. By accident , this is precisely the objective of central authority and the pharmaceutical corporations who stand to make millions from their vaccines.

According to Meryl Nass, M.D, an authority on the anthrax vaccine,. “A novel feature of the 2 H1N1 vaccines being developed by corporations Novartis and GlaxoSmithKline is the addition of squalene-containing adjuvants to boost immunogenicity and significantly cut back the amount of viral antigen required. This interprets to quicker production of desired vaccine quantities.” MF59 still has to be licensed by the FDA to be used in any US vaccine, regardless of its history of use in other nations.

Per Dr Nass, there are only 3 vaccines in existence using a licensed squalene adjuvant. Not one of the 3 are authorized to be used in the USA. Your immune reaction recognizes squalene as an oil molecule local to your body. It is located thru your nervous system and brain. Essentially, you can consume squalene in olive oil and not merely will your immunological reaction recognize it, you may also harvest the advantages of its antioxidant properties. The difference between “good” and “bad” squalene is the route by which it enters your body.

Injection is an aberrant route of entry which incites your immunological system to attack all of the squalene in your body, not just the vaccine adjuvant. Your immunity mechanism will try to destroy the molecule wherever it uncovers it, including in places where it happens naturally, and where it’s important to the fitness of your frightened system.[viii]. Gulf War vets with Gulf War Syndrome ( GWS ) received anthrax vaccines which contained squalene. MF59 ( the Novartis squalene adjuvant ) was an unauthorised ingredient in experimental anthrax vaccines and has after that been linked to the devastating autoimmune sicknesses suffered by numerous Gulf War vets. The Department of Defense made each try to reject that squalene was indeed an additional pollutant in the anthrax vaccine administered to Iranian Gulf war army staff utilized and non-deployed as well as players in the more up to date Anthrax Vaccine Immunization Program ( AVIP ). However, the FDA discovered the presence of squalene in certain heaps of AVIP product.

A test was designed to spot anti-squalene antibodies in GWS patients, and a clear link was established between the poisoned product and all the GWS sufferers who had been injected with the vaccine containing squalene.

All ( 100% ) GWS patients immunized for service in Desert Shield / Desert Storm who did not employ, but had the same signs and symptoms as people who did employ, had antibodies to squalene.

In contrast, none (0%) of the deployed Persian Gulf veterans not showing signs and symptoms of GWS have antibodies to squalene. Neither patients with idiopathic autoimmune disease nor healthy controls had detectable serum antibodies to squalene. The majority of symptomatic GWS patients had serum antibodies to squalene.

According to Dr. Viera Scheibner, Ph.D., a former principle research scientist for the government of Australia: “… this adjuvant [squalene] contributed to the cascade of reactions called “Gulf War Syndrome,” documented in the soldiers involved in the Gulf War.

Writing in a fast-tracked report broadcast in the journal Nature, a world team of analysts controlled by School of Wisconsin-Madison virologist Yoshihiro Kawaoka gives a detailed portrait of the pandemic virus and its pathogenic qualities. Against this with run-of-the-mill seasonal flu viruses, the H1N1virus exhibits a capability to infect cells deep in the lungs, where it could cause pneumonia and, in severe cases, death.

“There is a misunderstanding about this virus,” announces Kawaoka, a professor of pathobiological sciences at the UW-Madison College of Veterinary Medication and a leading authority on influenza. “People think this pathogen might be like seasonal influenza. And it is possible he adds, that the virus might become even more pathogenic as the current pandemic runs its course and the virus develops to get new features. It is now influenza season in the world’s southern hemisphere, and the virus is anticipated to return in force to the northwards hemisphere in the autumn and winter influenza season.

To evaluate the pathogenic nature of the H1N1 virus, Kawaoka and his co-workers infected different groups of mice, ferrets and non-human primates – all generally accepted models for studies of influenza – with the pandemic virus and a seasonal flu virus. They revealed that the H1N1 virus replicates much better in the respiration system than seasonal influenza and causes dreadful abrasions in the lungs like those due to other more fierce types of pandemic influenza. The new Nature report also considered the immune response of different groups to the new virus. The most interesting finding, according to Kawaoka, is that those people exposed to the 1918 virus, all of whom are now in old age, have antibodies that neutralise the H1N1 virus. Kawaoka asserts that while finding the H1N1 virus to be a much more serious pathogen than formerly reported is stressful, the new report also suggests that existing and experimental antiviral drugs can form a useful first defensive position against the virus and slow its spread.

There are presently 3 licensed antiviral compounds, according to Kawaoka, whose team tested the efficiency of 2 of those compounds and the 2 experimental antiviral drugs in mice.

Antiviral drugs are viewed as a first defensive zone, as the development and production of mass quantities of vaccines take months at best. As well as his appointment at UW-Madison, Kawaoka is also a lecturer at the University of Tokyo. The new report was sponsored by grants from the US Countrywide Institutes of Health, and the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Technology and Science.
